I’ve always desperately wanted a ’37 Cord 810 Westchester.

Thankfully, I bought a plane ticket to Massachusetts, where I recently saw this lovely example. I am betting it was expensive.

I thought rental cars had a “no shirt no shoes no rent” policy?

No, it’s more “no shirt, no shoes, you’re getting a freaking Camry.”

I want to know how they made that bad ass grill. Must have been quite a process in 1937.

Humble apologies. If I had Cord money, I wouldn’t be living in a one-bedroom apartment. Or I’d at least be living in a nicer one-bedroom apartment.

Some pictures show it more than others, but there appears in some to be a little bit of disconnect/break in the middle of the ribs under the chroming or paint. Possibly a seam done with solder.

Kinja'd!!!

Not really visible in this picture, though this shows some other detail.

If I had to guess, it might have been hand die-rolled into a curved-sided “vee” and then final formed into the bend with a static die, each half. Then, seamed at the back edge, rolled on the ends, and stitched in the middle with solder from left and right before coating. That’s if the top and bottom aren’t separate stampings, with an edge rolled onto the top one.

Whatever it was, if it’s anything other than a zinc cast (don’t think it’s a zinc cast), it’s got to be hollow to have that profile. That means lots of hand work..

Regarding hand work, I’ve seen a few places stating that the Cord’s roof was welded together from several small pressings (3/4 down the article), because they didn’t have the capability for one large pressing, among other production inefficiencies.

That lines up with the kind of thing I was betting on for the grill. Also of note: the Ruxton which paralleled the Cord in a lot of ways for a few years was made using body dies originally developed for IIRC Riley. So, the body was similar to a Riley of several years prior, but sectioned lengthwise and widened.

I am mystified by the decision to only have front suicide doors.
